You don’t need a massive budget to make your home feel more luxurious. A few strategic updates can elevate your space and give it a high-end look without breaking the bank. Here are just a few simple ways to achieve that polished, designer feel in your home.
Upsize your rugs – Most people buy their rugs too small. Way too small…Changing to a larger carpet in your living area, dining room or bedroom is one of the fastest ways to make your property look more upscale. There are wonderful, washable rugs available that won’t break the bank! You can even purchase two plain high pile rugs and use them together as a larger piece! This is an old staging hack I used a lot as a baby stager.
Updated Lighting – This plays a huge role in setting the tone of a space. Replace dated “boob lights” for a contractor pack of more sleek flush mount lights. They’re inexpensive but are so much more stylish. Change out dated dining or kitchen chandeliers for a modern look or add a statement light to your primary bedroom. Replace “Hollywood lights” in your bathroom for something sleek. And you do not need to break the bank! Lighting is one of the less expensive ways to update. Costco has great choices that are cost effective too! Using dimmers adds warmth and sophistication, instantly making your home feel more refined. I recently added lots of inexpensive rechargeable lighting to our home which gives it a really custom look when put under cabinets and in all our closets for less than $10 each.
Oversized art – Big art creates a curated, high-end feel. Whether it’s an abstract painting, black-and-white photography, or framed fabric, large pieces make a statement and add personality to a room. Stick to neutral tones or simple designs for a timeless look. And doing your own art can be very fun and therapeutic. If you can’t afford one larger piece, hanging art in pairs can give the illusion of a larger piece. Hang them at the same height about 4 inches apart and voila. Incidentally, the proper height to hang art is between 57 – 60 inches from the floor to the center of the art piece unless they’re hanging over console tables or couches. In that case, they should be 4-6 inches above.
Texture – Mixing textures is the key to creating a layered, expensive look. Add throw pillows in velvet or linen, invest in a plush rug, and use metallic accents and natural woods. Keep décor minimal and intentional—group items in sets of three things of varying height, use stacked coffee table books, and add a statement vase or sculpture. A clean, styled space looks effortlessly chic and elegant. A cluttered space feels chaotic and less expensive than simple thought out vignettes.
Small details can make a big impact. Replace outdated cabinet pulls, doorknobs, and towel bars with modern finishes like matte black or gold. Adding wider baseboards makes a property look richer.
You do not have to spend a fortune to achieve a high-end look. Thoughtful updates like better lighting, curated décor, and upgraded hardware can make all the difference. Try these easy changes, and watch your home transform into a stylish, sophisticated space!
